The Ministry of Education and the Korea Educational Development Institute announced the results of the competency assessment conducted on 10 education colleges and the Korea National University of Education, a comprehensive teacher training university, on the 7th.

The government has been conducting competency assessments since 1998 to analyze the competency system of teacher training institutions and utilize it as a foundation for policy data.

This assessment targets the 2022-2024 academic years, evaluating a total of 23 indicators such as teaching staff and curriculum, and assigning grades from A to E.

The universities that received an A grade are Gongju National University of Education, Gwangju National University of Education, Daegu National University of Education, Busan National University of Education, Seoul National University of Education, Jeonju National University of Education, Cheongju National University of Education, Chuncheon National University of Education, and Korea National University of Education, totaling nine. Gyeongin National University of Education and Jinju National University of Education received a B grade.

Universities with an A grade receive a commendation from the Minister. A B grade is subject to the current maintenance measures.

There were no C to E grades. A C grade requires reducing enrollment capacity by 30%, a D grade by 50%, and an E grade results in the dissolution of the institution.

The Ministry of Education plans to share analytical data on this assessment result with each university. Additionally, together with the Korea Educational Development Institute, it will conduct a competency assessment of teacher training institutions concerning the education and teacher certification courses at universities with and without colleges of education this year.

Jang Miran, the Ministry of Education’s director of teacher and parent support, said, “We will comprehensively assess the competencies of teacher training institutions and actively support the transition to a future-oriented training system and the direction of institutional specialization.”
