A cold wave warning is issued for Seoul this winter. A cold wave warning is effective when the morning low temperature remains below minus 12 degrees Celsius for more than two days or when temperatures drop sharply, leading to expected damage.

The Korea Meteorological Administration announced that a cold wave warning will be issued for Seoul at 9 p.m. on the 8th. Cold air is flowing into Seoul along with a continental high-pressure system expanding from northern China. The morning low temperature is expected to drop from minus 4 degrees to minus 12 degrees on the 9th. With strong winds, the perceived temperature could fall to minus 18 degrees.

The Seoul city government issued its first frozen pipe warning this winter at 9 a.m. that day. A frozen pipe warning is issued when temperatures remain below minus 10 degrees Celsius for more than two days. The city urged residents to let tap water flow slightly while going out to prevent freezing.

According to the city, from December 23 last year to January 6 this year, there were 35 cases of frozen water meters (13 in apartments, 13 at construction sites, 8 in single-family dwellings, and 1 in a commercial building). The city said, “Strong cold is expected from the afternoon,” and advised, “As much as possible, refrain from going out, wear warm clothing when going out, and pay attention to health management.”
