Choi Yun-sung, a professor emeritus at Pohang University of Science and Technology (POSTECH), has been appointed as the 7th director of the National Institute for Mathematical Sciences.

On the 6th, the institute held an inauguration ceremony and noted that the new director, Choi, has begun his duties. His term lasts for three years starting from that day.

The new director, Choi, graduated from the Department of Mathematics at Seoul National University and received his master's and doctoral degrees in functional analysis from the University of Rochester in the United States. After working at the Department of Mathematics at Pusan National University, he has served as a professor at POSTECH since 1988. He has held major positions at POSTECH, including chair of the Department of Mathematics, dean of academic affairs, and director of the POSTECH Mathematics Institute. His contributions were recognized when he was honored as a professor emeritus in March.

He is a leading authority in the field of functional analysis and has served as the editor-in-chief of the Journal of the Korean Mathematical Society, the representative academic journal of the Korean Mathematical Society. He has also received the Korean Mathematical Society Academic Award in 2015 and the Korean Mathematical Society Education Award in 2023. The institute welcomed a new director nearly a year after former director Kim Hyun-min resigned voluntarily in January last year, prior to the end of his term.

The new director, Choi, said, "This year marks the 20th anniversary of the establishment of the institute, which has developed into a leading research center in Korea with a focus on industrial mathematics. Moving forward, I will work to further strengthen the foundation of the institute so that we can enhance our international standing."
