This series of photographs, taken over the course of a year in 2024, shows how the sun moves across the sky of Earth. Known as "analemma," this figure-eight-shaped curve represents photos taken only at 1 p.m. on clear days in the Kayseri region of Turkey. The sun on the dates corresponding to the summer solstice and winter solstice in 2024 is at the top and bottom of this curve, aligning with the astronomical start of summer and winter in the Northern Hemisphere.
Though it is the midpoint between the summer solstice and winter solstice, the point where the figure-eight curve does not intersect indicates the 2024 vernal equinox and autumnal equinox, marking the beginning of spring and fall, respectively. The landscape of this time-lapse image also features regional mountain peaks along the southern horizon, as well as Mount Erciyes, a dormant volcano.
