GS Retail's supermarket GS The Fresh announced on the 6th that it will focus on enhancing livestock items (categories) as a core strategic product for fresh food this year.

GS The Fresh plans to promote major activities for livestock product development, including ▲ stable procurement of high-quality livestock products ▲ price competitiveness innovation ▲ establishment of signature events. To achieve this, GS The Fresh aims to strengthen cooperative systems with livestock partners and ensure stable procurement of high-quality livestock products. In particular, it will enhance investment and support systems for excellent partners to secure high-quality raw materials and establish a virtuous distribution system involving processing and stable supply.

This decision appears to be in response to the increasing trend in fresh food sales centered on livestock products and changes in food culture, as per capita meat consumption has surpassed rice consumption. According to the Korea Rural Economic Institute and Statistics Korea, as of 2023, the per capita meat consumption is 60.6 kg, while rice consumption is only 56.4 kg.

Additionally, GS The Fresh plans to provide support benefits, including differentiated joint development, enhanced product promotions, and infrastructure investments, to excellent partners. On the 9th, GS The Fresh will hold a partnership growth agreement ceremony with livestock partners and sign a business agreement focusing on this content.

A new event titled "Meat is GS The Fresh" will also be launched. This event is an annual fixed event where popular livestock products are sold at nationwide lowest prices. Eleven items that are highly consumed, including beef, pork, chicken, and eggs, will be main products of the event. This event will run for the first time this year until the 14th. Main products, such as 300g of two-star Hanwoo sirloin, will be sold in stages, and customers using GS Pay will receive discounts of up to 50%.

Kim Kyung-jin, head of the fresh institutional sector at GS Retail, noted, "We will strengthen our differentiated fresh product development capabilities by placing high-quality and price-competitive livestock products at the forefront," adding, "We will take the lead in reducing the burden of grocery prices."
