As of December last year, the app that saw the largest increase in monthly active users (MAU) domestically was Google. During the same period, the app with the highest number of users was YouTube.
According to an analysis by mobile big data platform IGAWorks' Mobile Index on the 5th, Google had 39,105,839 users in December last year, an increase of 2,287,403 users (6.21%) compared to the previous month, ranking first in user growth. Netflix ranked second with an increase of 1,387,936 users. Google also claimed the top spot in user growth in November, with an increase of 2,443,857 users.
In terms of usage time, YouTube topped the chart, followed by Instagram, Naver, Kakao, and TikTok Lite in that order.
Last month, the top app by user count was YouTube, with an MAU of 46,829,531. KakaoTalk (45,501,980) and Naver (43,776,020) claimed second and third places, respectively. Google and Google Chrome took fourth and fifth places.
Among shopping apps, Coupang was the only one to enter the top 10, ranking sixth with 32,016,534 users.
Meanwhile, the app with the highest number of new installs was the Chinese shopping app Temu. As of December last year, Temu recorded 1,177,405 new installs, followed by Instagram (825,982) and TikTok Lite (818,861).
Temu began gaining significant attention in Korea starting at the end of 2023; however, it has been assessed that its monthly churn rate is between 37% and 50%, and its share of online shopping card payment amounts is merely 0.7%, indicating its market influence remains minimal.
The Mobile Index noted, "While the growth of AliExpress and Temu is noteworthy, their overall impact on the market is more a 'gentle breeze' than a 'storm.'"
