Samsung Display announced on the 30th that it has met the highest standard of 'platinum' regarding the 'zero waste to landfill' verification, which was commissioned to UL, a global agency in applied safety science, for all its establishments both domestically and internationally.
'Zero waste to landfill' verification is an international standard that measures corporations' resource recycling efforts. UL verifies the recent one-year resource recycling rate of each establishment, awarding grades of silver (90-94%), gold (95-99%), and platinum (100%).
Samsung Display first obtained the platinum grade at its Asan 1 establishment in 2020. The following year, four domestic establishments, including Asan 2, Cheonan, and Giheung, received the platinum grade, while last year, overseas establishments in Dongguan, Tianjin, and Noida, India, also achieved the platinum grade. This year, efforts to improve the resource recycling rate led to all domestic and overseas establishments holding the platinum grade.
Samsung Display is transitioning systems across all establishments to recycle waste that was previously incinerated or landfill. Instead of incinerating waste PVC generated during the dismantling and replacement of production lines, they are being reprocessed as recycled PVC raw materials. Waste glass produced during display manufacturing is being recycled for high-value uses, such as in fiberglass or paving block manufacturing. The company is also continuing efforts to increase recycling rates by discovering new partners or jointly developing processing technologies.
Samsung Display has achieved noticeable results not only in waste treatment but also in reduction processes. Last year, the waste generated across all establishments of Samsung Display was approximately 150,000 tons, which is more than a 20% decrease compared to about 190,000 tons two years ago.
Lee Gun-hyung, global infrastructure head at Samsung Display (vice president), noted, 'This achievement of the highest grade for zero waste to landfill across all establishments is the result of faithfully implementing our environmental management strategy,' adding, 'The transition to a resource recycling system is recognized as an essential element of sustainable management. We will continue to push forward efforts to reduce waste and promote recycling.'
