CJ Logistics announced on the 8th that it invested 6 billion won for the seven major welfare support programs, including children's educational expenses, childbirth support, entrance congratulatory funds, additional health check-up expenses, and family event supports for over 22,000 courier drivers last year. CJ Logistics has cumulatively invested 55 billion won in this kind of welfare support.
Since the CJ Group acquired CJ Logistics in 2012, the company has been strengthening welfare benefits for courier drivers, starting with the educational expense support system. Although the company is not obligated to provide welfare benefits since courier drivers are self-employed contractors with agents, CJ Logistics explained that it introduced these measures to promote mutual growth among courier workers and improve service levels.
Over the past 12 years, the expanded welfare items have resulted in an increased number of beneficiaries. CJ Logistics reported that the number of beneficiaries in the first year of the welfare system was 1,300, but it increased to 22,000 last year. As the number of beneficiaries and items in the welfare system grew, CJ Logistics spent a record annual expenditure of 6.6 billion won on the operation of the system in 2023.
The educational expense support from CJ Logistics provides up to 4 million won annually for each child of courier drivers who have worked for five years or more, with support available for up to two children. Last year alone, a total of 1,108 courier drivers received educational expense support for their children. Courier drivers with school-age children receive entrance congratulatory funds of up to 500,000 won for kindergarten and 200,000 won for elementary, middle, and high school, depending on their delivery experience.
If a courier driver or their spouse gives birth, they receive a childbirth support fund worth 500,000 won along with a gift. In cases of family events such as marriages or deaths in the direct family, funeral money, delivery expenses for funeral supplies, wreaths, and burial items can be utilized through the event support system. Small gifts are also provided during holidays and the courier driver's birthday.
The provision of additional health check-ups is a system implemented since 2014 to ensure the health rights of courier drivers. In addition to the basic health check-ups provided by the government, CJ Logistics has added over 60 examination items, including diabetes, kidney disease, liver fibrosis, and liver function tests. If classified as high-risk based on check-up results, individuals can undergo further examinations without bearing the costs of additional check-ups and substitute delivery on check-up days through the "in-depth health check-up service."
Yoon Jae-seung, head of the On-Ebon division at CJ Logistics, noted, "The job satisfaction of courier drivers must improve so that we can provide the best service to customers" and stated, "We will strive for the phased implementation of a five-day work week and expansion of welfare benefits to encourage courier drivers to take pride in their profession and contribute to the successful establishment of seven-day deliveries."
