The Financial Supervisory Service (FSS) has developed a generative artificial intelligence (AI) program and introduced it into its operations. This is the first time the FSS has officially adopted a generative AI program for workplace use. The FSS aims to improve the program's performance and enhance employees' utilization of it in the first half of this year.

According to the financial sector on the 3rd, the FSS has implemented the generative AI program 'chatfss' on its internal work portal since the 25th of last month. FSS is an abbreviation for the Financial Supervisory Service in English. Chatfss is a proprietary program developed by FSS employees. The FSS created chatfss based on Meta's open-source code, Llama 3.

The official introduction of the FSS's generative AI program is the first of its kind. Until now, FSS employees have not been able to utilize generative AI from private corporations in their work. The work PCs for FSS employees are connected to both an internal network and the external network (general internet). However, not all programs are available just by accessing the external network. The FSS has completely blocked access to generative AI sites from private corporations, such as chatGPT or DeepSeek, through work PCs. Using private generative AI services may lead to data entered by users being shared on the service providers' clouds. Therefore, the FSS has restricted access to generative AI to prevent sensitive information leaks related to supervisory and inspection tasks for financial institutions.

As the use cases for generative AI in the private sector have increased, the FSS considered ways to use AI for work and developed its own program since it could not utilize private AI. Currently, chatfss supports functions such as searching for materials stored on the FSS internal network, summarizing data, translating foreign languages, and managing schedules in its test version. Users can issue work commands to chatfss through text input, similar to how they would with private AI. The overall interface (UI) of chatfss is also similar to that of generative AI from private corporations.

The FSS plans to procure new graphic processing units (GPUs) and improve the performance of chatfss in the first half of this year. The current version of chatfss has been developed using consumer-grade GPUs. High-quality generative AI requires specialized GPUs for program development. The FSS has allocated a budget of 180 million won for GPU purchases this year and is in the process of bidding for the purchase.

An FSS official said, 'The goal is to create a program that assists in drafting documents and provides expertise related to financial supervision and inspection tasks,' adding, 'We will develop the program to be practically helpful for employees' work.' The official noted, 'After procuring GPUs in the first half of the year, we will invest more manpower and time to enhance the performance of chatfss.'
