On the 18th, Chairperson Lee Chan-hee of the Samsung Compliance Committee interpreted Samsung Electronics Chairman Lee Jae-yong's orders of 'tough Samsung' and 'life-or-death' as reflecting the internal consensus to do their best.
On the same day, Chairperson Lee spoke with reporters before the third regular meeting of the Compliance Committee held at the Samsung Life Insurance building in Seocho-gu, Seoul. When asked about the first task to overcome Samsung's crisis, he replied, "I think everything is contained in the chairman's words."
Recently, Chairman Lee Jae-yong reproached Samsung executives at a seminar, saying, "We have lost our Samsung-like capabilities," and ordered, "Only when the executives thoroughly reflect and act with the resolution of 'life or death' will we move forward." He also pointed out, "We are facing a 'survival issue' that is on a different level from before," and emphasized that "executives must conduct a deep reflection."
Within the business community, one of the reasons identified for Samsung's weakened competitiveness is the lack of control at the group level, suggesting that discussions on reviving Samsung's control tower may gain momentum.
In this regard, Chairperson Lee noted, "We are continuing to discuss the reconstruction of the control tower." In the annual report of the Compliance Committee at the end of last year, Chairperson Lee emphasized that "it is a time for new changes," stating, "There needs to be a reconstruction of the control tower for focused management choices, the elimination of barriers that hinder smooth communication within the organization, and innovative governance improvements for responsible management, such as the return of the CEO to the executive board."
