Harry Kane (33, Bayern Munich) has finally been recognized as the world's best soccer player. He became the first English player in 25 years to win the Ballon d'Or. Spain, the 2026 FIFA North and Central America World Cup champion, also swept major individual awards and stood at the center of world soccer.
The 2026 Ballon d'Or ceremony, jointly hosted by the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) and France Football, was held on the 27th (Korea time) at the London Palladium in London, England. This was the first time the Ballon d'Or ceremony, now in its 70th year, was held in London.
The top honor, the men's Ballon d'Or, went to Kane. Kane became the first English player to win the Ballon d'Or in 25 years since Michael Owen in 2001.
Kane is a striker representing England. He spent a long time at Tottenham Hotspur and grew into a top Premier League goalscorer. In particular, he led Tottenham's attack alongside Son Heung-min, displaying a partnership that will remain in Premier League history.
Apart from his individual performances, he had little association with trophy wins. Despite his outstanding scoring ability, he failed to reach the top of major competitions and even earned the unwelcome nickname "the king without trophies."
Change came in 2023. Kane left long-time club Tottenham to join German giant Bayern Munich. His scoring touch remained on the new stage. He established himself as Bayern's key striker and cemented his reputation as one of Europe's top goal scorers.
The 2025-26 season was especially dominant. Kane scored 73 goals and provided 8 assists in 65 matches across his club and the England national team. He scored 36 goals in the Bundesliga and added 14 goals in the UEFA Champions League.
With Kane's contributions, Bayern won the Bundesliga, the German Football Association (DFB) Pokal, and the German Super Cup. They also reached the semifinals of the Champions League.
He also showed his presence with the national team. As England captain at the 2026 North and Central America World Cup, he scored six goals and helped his country achieve third place.
Kane's scoring ability was further recognized as he also claimed the Gerd Müller Trophy, awarded to the season's top scorer. He was again acknowledged for his scoring after previously sharing the award with Kylian Mbappé in 2024.
In his acceptance speech, Kane thanked his teammates and coaching staff who helped him. He emphasized that scoring many goals is not possible alone and highlighted the roles of those around him. He also expressed gratitude to his wife, Kate.
Having won the Gerd Müller Trophy and the Ballon d'Or, Kane was recognized as the world's best striker and player.
While Kane was the Ballon d'Or recipient, Spain's strength was prominent in other major individual awards.
Luis de la Fuente, who leads the Spain national team, won the Johan Cruyff Trophy, awarded to the best coach.
De la Fuente led Spain to the top at last summer's North and Central America World Cup. Spain drew their first group match with Cape Verde but went on to win subsequent matches, defeating Portugal, Belgium, France and Argentina to become world champions.
His game management in the semifinal against France and the final against Argentina was particularly impressive. Spain maintained high possession while using quick counterattacks and boasted a stable defense that conceded only one goal in eight matches at the tournament.
Since taking charge of the Spain national team in 2023, de la Fuente achieved UEFA Euro 2024 victory followed by the World Cup. Spain continued an unbeaten streak after the World Cup, setting a record of 42 consecutive matches without defeat.
The coach of the year award, newly established in 2024, was previously won by Carlo Ancelotti and Luis Enrique. De la Fuente became the first national team coach to receive this award.
Spain's next-generation superstar Lamine Yamal (19, Barcelona) was also one of the ceremony's protagonists.
Yamal won the Kopa Trophy, awarded to the best player under 21. This is his third consecutive win after 2024 and 2025.
Last season Yamal played 57 official matches for Barcelona, scoring 20 goals and providing 20 assists. He contributed to Barcelona's La Liga and Supercopa de España titles and experienced World Cup victory with the Spain national team.
In the Kopa Trophy rankings, Yamal's Barcelona teammate Pau Cubarsi ranked second. Warren Zaire-Emery was third, Reinierd Kal was fourth, and Yann Diomandé was fifth.
Spain's dominance continued in the goalkeeper category. Unai Simón (29) of Athletic Bilbao received the Yashin Trophy, awarded to the world's best male goalkeeper.
Simón greatly contributed to Spain's World Cup victory by guarding the goal. He extended his consecutive minutes without conceding at the World Cup to 650 minutes, surpassing the previous record of 517 minutes set by Walter Zenga at the 1990 Italy tournament.
Simón recorded 22 clean sheets in 62 official matches last season and was recognized as the best goalkeeper ahead of David Raya (Arsenal) and Thibaut Courtois (Real Madrid).
Thus, Spain claimed three major individual awards: men's coach of the year, the Kopa Trophy and the Yashin Trophy. The success at the World Cup carried over to the Ballon d'Or ceremony.
Meanwhile, the men's Ballon d'Or winner was Kane, not a Spanish player. Acknowledged for his overwhelming scoring in the 2025-26 season, club successes and World Cup performances, Kane earned the brightest individual award of his football life.
