On the 29th, the third anniversary of the Oct. 29 Itaewon disaster, sirens will sound across Seoul for one minute starting at 10:29 a.m. A government official said it is a memorial alert, not a disaster alert.
The Ministry of the Interior and Safety (MOIS) and the Seoul Metropolitan Government stated accordingly that they will hold a memorial ceremony for the third anniversary of the Itaewon disaster at Gwanghwamun Square in Seoul on the day. This is the first time the government has held an official memorial event together with the families of the Itaewon disaster victims.
The memorial will begin at 10:29 a.m. on the day with a moment of silence for the victims, accompanied by memorial sirens sounding across Seoul. It will proceed in the following order: greetings by a representative of the bereaved families, screening of a memorial video, memorial addresses, a reading of a poem marking the third anniversary, greetings by families of foreign victims, and a memorial performance. About 2,000 people, including Prime Minister Kim Min-seok, the National Assembly speaker, leaders of political parties and religious groups, civic organizations, and the general public, will attend.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of the Interior and Safety (MOIS) also plans to provide guidance through the Emergency Ready App, a disaster alert service for foreigners, so that tourists are aware of the memorial sirens.
