Starting the night of the 2nd, when the Chuseok holiday begins, rain will fall mainly across regions south of Chungcheong. Jeju and the south coast will see heavy rain with gusts, thunder, and lightning, so be careful about safety on roads, at sea, and in the air during the homebound travel rush.
According to the Korea meteorological Administration, rain will begin tonight in South Chungcheong, Honam, and Jeju. In the early hours of the 3rd, the first day of the holiday, it will spread to North Chungcheong and South Gyeongsang, and in the afternoon of the same day to the Yeongdong region of Gangwon and North Gyeongsang. On the evening of the 3rd, there will be a spell of rain in southern Yeongseo, Gangwon.
After that, central Chungcheong, inland North Gyeongsang, and the southern coast of South Jeolla will continue to see rain through the early hours of the 4th, and Yeongdong in Gangwon, the Gyeongsang coast, and Jeju through the morning of the 4th. On Jeju and the southern coast of South Jeolla, there will be periods of heavy downpours between the early morning and midday of the 3rd, with hourly rainfall around 30 mm.
Cumulative rainfall through the 4th is as follows: ▲ Jeju and the South Jeolla coast 30–80 mm (Jeju up to more than 120 mm, South Jeolla coast up to more than 100 mm) ▲ Gwangju Metropolitan City, inland South Jeolla, and the south coast of South Gyeongsang 20–60 mm ▲ North Jeolla 10–40 mm ▲ Busan, Ulsan, and inland South Gyeongsang 5–40 mm ▲ Daegu and North Gyeongsang 5–30 mm ▲ Yeongdong in Gangwon and Chungcheong 5–20 mm ▲ Ulleung Island and Dokdo around 5 mm ▲ southern Yeongseo in Gangwon less than 5 mm.
Rough seas are also expected. This includes the central outer offshore of the West Sea and the southern offshore of the West Sea in the early hours of the 3rd, the western South Sea and waters off Jeju in the morning, and the eastern offshore of the South Sea on the afternoon of the 4th. Winds will be very strong at 30–55 km/h (8–15 m/s), and waves will be very high at 1.0–3.5 meters. Marine gale advisories may be issued for these waters. The Korea meteorological Administration said, "If you plan to use ferries or flights during the homebound travel, it is necessary to check the operation information in advance."
On the 3rd, strong winds with instantaneous speeds around 55 km/h (70 km/h in the mountains) will blow along coasts and in mountainous areas nationwide. In particular, in the mid-slope northern interior and mountainous regions of Jeju, from the morning of the 3rd, winds will blow stronger than other areas with instantaneous speeds of 70 km/h (90 km/h in the mountains), and wind direction will shift abruptly.
Temperatures during the holiday will stay similar to or a little higher than average. The high on the afternoon of the 2nd is forecast at 24–27 C. On the 3rd, morning lows will be 15–21 C, with afternoon highs of 20–25 C.
Meanwhile, on the 6th, the day of Chuseok, the full moon is expected to be visible in all regions except eastern areas such as Yeongdong in Gangwon and North Gyeongsang. After the 5th, there is a chance of light rain in central regions including the Seoul metropolitan area.
