The Ministry of the Interior and Safety said on the 29th that 55 of the 647 government services that were suspended due to the fire at the Daejeon National Computing and Information Service (NCIS) have been restored, including the resident registration system.
According to the ministry, as of 10 a.m. the same day, 55 services have been fully restored. That is 8.5% of the total. Restoration has been proceeding in stages: 30 as of 10 p.m. the previous day, 39 as of 12 a.m. the same day, and 47 as of 8:30 a.m.
The recently normalized list includes the ministry's resident registration system and some postal logistics services of the Ministry of Science and ICT. Government24, mobile ID, and Korea Post financial services (internet deposits, smart deposits, financial product mall, internet insurance, smart insurance), which people use frequently in daily life, have also been restored. The ministry said, "We will provide notices through Naver and Daum each time the remaining systems resume service."
To address public service inconveniences until the disruption is resolved, the government decided to operate the joint government civil service center (110 call center), local civil service centers (such as the 120 call center), and a dedicated civil service support team starting the same day. A list of 96 systems whose restoration will be difficult for an extended period because the data center was completely destroyed by fire will also be released soon. It is expected to take at least two weeks to restore those systems.
Earlier, on the 26th at about 8:15 p.m., a fire broke out due to a lithium-ion battery explosion in the computer room on the fifth floor of the NCIS building in Huaam-dong, Yuseong-gu, Daejeon. Damage to systems affected by the fire caused government services to go down all at once.
The ministry said it is prioritizing systems that affect public safety, property, and economic activity, and is proceeding with restoration by priority in accordance with a graded system based on system importance. Minister Yun Ho-jung of the ministry said, "We will mobilize all capabilities to accelerate the speed of recovery to minimize inconvenience to the public."
