An autumn heat wave hit Jeju. It was recorded as the latest heat advisory issued since 2008, when the Korea meteorological Administration began operating the heat wave alert system.
At 11 a.m. on the 26th, the Korea meteorological Administration issued a heat advisory for the western, northern, eastern, and southern parts of Jeju Island. A heat advisory is issued when the daily maximum heat index of 33 degrees or higher is expected to persist for two or more days.
Earlier that day, Gujwa in Jeju recorded a daily high of 33.3 degrees, Oedo 32 degrees, Seongsan Susan 31.9 degrees, Jeju 31.5 degrees, and Aewol 31.5 degrees. The heat index is in the 32–34 degree range.
A Korea meteorological Administration official said, "The North Pacific high is positioned to the southeast of our country, and cold air is descending from the northwest. In between, around Jeju, southerly winds are strengthening," and noted, "With the smoother inflow of hot and humid air, the heat index has risen sharply."
Notably, the heat advisory issued for Jeju on this day is the latest heat alert on record. The previous latest heat alert was Sept. 21 last year (Jeju).
The Korea meteorological Administration urged people to take special care with their health, saying it will be very hot with the maximum heat index rising to around 33 degrees, especially along coastal areas, and that some places may experience tropical nights.
Meanwhile, rain is forecast in many parts of the country this weekend. On Saturday the 27th, from the afternoon there will be places with rain in South Chungcheong and the Jeolla region, and from the night in the rest of the Chungcheong region and the western inland of North and South Gyeongsang. On Sunday the 28th, most areas nationwide will see occasional rain in the early morning, which will stop in the afternoon.
