Ahead of the 2025 APEC (Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation) summit, the government will launch a nationwide intensive environmental cleanup campaign. The Ministry of the Interior and Safety said it will run a 10-day "Korea makeover week" from the 22nd to the 1st of next month.
"Korea makeover" is a nationwide environmental cleanup campaign in which related ministries, local governments, local communities, volunteers, and the public participate together to improve living spaces and enhance the national image.
Accordingly, over the next 10 days, the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries will focus on coastlines, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport on roads, the Ministry of Environment on rivers and parks, and the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs on rural areas. Local governments will work with local volunteer groups to clean traditional markets, densely populated residential areas, multiuse facilities, and major tourist spots. On the first day of the campaign, the 22nd, about 20,000 people gathered to clean at 141 locations nationwide, including Seoul, Busan, Daegu, and Incheon.
Yun Ho-jung, Minister of the Interior and Safety, said, "The Korea makeover is not a simple environmental cleanup, but a public-participation campaign to renew the entire land, which is both the living space of the people and the face of Korea," adding, "With Chuseok and APEC approaching, we ask the public to actively join the large-scale cleanups."
Meanwhile, the APEC summit will be held in Gyeongju, North Gyeongsang, from Oct. 31 to Nov. 1. Side events will be held across the country, including in Incheon, Jeju, and Busan, before and after the summit's official schedule.
