This summer, when the North Pacific High and the Tibetan High covered Korea simultaneously, was recorded as the hottest in history. The average daily temperature from June to August was 25.7 degrees, setting a record for the highest ever. The heat did not discriminate between day and night. This summer also recorded the highest average of the highest daily temperature and the lowest nightly temperature ever.
According to the Korea Meteorological Administration's report on the 'Recent Heat Wave and Tropical Night Situation' released on the 1st, the average temperature nationwide this summer (from June 1 to August 31) was 25.7 degrees, ranking first among summer average temperatures since 1973. This marked another new record following last summer's 25.6 degrees. The year 1973 is significant as the year when the nationwide weather observation network was expanded, serving as the baseline for various weather records.
The average maximum daily temperature this summer was recorded at 30.7 degrees, ranking first since 1973. Previously, the highest record was 30.5 degrees in 1994. The average minimum daily temperature was 21.5 degrees, ranking second, with the all-time highest being 21.7 degrees recorded last year.
The average minimum temperature overnight (from 6:01 p.m. to 9 a.m. the next day) was 21.9 degrees. This is the highest on record. It matches last year's record of 21.9 degrees; however, due to the principle of weather records that states that if values are the same, the most recent one is ranked higher, this year is recorded as the highest.
The number of heat wave days (days when the maximum daily temperature exceeds 33 degrees) was 28.1 days, ranking third overall, following 31.0 days in 2018 and 28.5 days in 1994. The number of tropical nights (nights when the minimum temperature exceeds 25 degrees) was 15.5 days, ranking fourth, following 20.2 days in 2024, 16.5 days in 2018, and 16.5 days in 1994.
This summer, the national average precipitation was 619.7 mm, making it the 19th lowest among 53 summers since 1973. This was only 85% of the average summer precipitation of 727.3 mm. In Gangwon Province, which has experienced severe drought, the precipitation this summer was 232.5 mm, the 'least' in summer rainfall since 1973. This was 107.3 mm less than the previous minimum (339.8 mm in 1997).
