The Police Bureau of the Ministry of Interior and Safety, which was established under the Yoon Suk-yeol administration, has vanished into history after three years. The Ministry of Interior and Safety removed the nameplate from the Police Bureau office on the 12th floor of the government office in Gwanghwamun, Seoul, on the 26th. This was carried out following the proclamation and implementation on that day of the 'Administrative Safety Ministry and its affiliated agencies organizational amendment decree' for the abolition of the Police Bureau.
Minister Yoon Ho-jung wrote on his Facebook on the day the abolition of the Police Bureau was completed, "This brings us one step closer to the genuine end of the 'Dec. 3 insurrection' and the normalization of the police organization," adding, "I will actively support efforts to clarify various suspicions regarding the issues from the process of establishing the Police Bureau, unjust personnel punishments, and the role of the Police Bureau during the insurrection situation."
He also stated, "I will continue efforts to guarantee the autonomy of the police and to substantiate democratic control," adding, "I will do everything related to ensuring that the police transform into 'the people's police,' serving only for the safety and happiness of citizens, in line with the governance philosophy of a government of popular sovereignty."
Meanwhile, 12 police personnel who had been dispatched from the former Police Bureau of the Ministry of Interior and Safety returned to their original posts, and four Ministry of Interior and Safety officials also returned to the Autonomous Decentralization Policy Division to take on duties related to autonomous police.
