The police bureau's abolition work is being finalized. Thus, the police bureau established under the Ministry of the Interior and Safety during the Yoon Suk-yeol administration in 2022 will disappear after three years.
The Ministry of the Interior and Safety announced on the 25th that the revised enforcement decree containing the abolition of the police bureau will be announced and enforced on the 26th.
The abolition of the police bureau was a campaign pledge of President Lee Jae-myung. After about three weeks since the initiation of the restructuring to abolish the police bureau on the 3rd of this month, the abolition work has been completed. The Ministry of the Interior and Safety stated that it would transfer the tasks previously handled by the police bureau, such as supporting community policing, to relevant departments to ensure smooth implementation.
Minister Yoon Ho-jung said, "By wrapping up the police bureau's abolition work, which we have pushed forward with a sense of speed since my inauguration, we have finally taken a step closer to normalizing the police organization," adding, "While continuing efforts to ensure the independence of the police and substantiate democratic control, we will provide all related support so that the police can become a 'police for the people', serving solely for the safety and happiness of citizens, in line with the national governance philosophy of a government by the people."
