Imi-seon (59, photo) is the newly appointed Administrator of the Korea Meteorological Administration and has served as the head of the Seoul Metropolitan Meteorological Administration until recently. He has become the first 'female' Administrator of the Korea Meteorological Administration since the establishment of the government.
Born in 1966 in Busan, this Administrator graduated from Ewha Womans University with a degree in science education and received his master's and doctorate in atmospheric science from Seoul National University.
Since joining the Korea Meteorological Administration in 1992, he has held key positions, including Chief Weather Forecaster, Director of Forecasting Policy, Head of the National Meteorological Satellite Center, Director of Observation Infrastructure, Director of Earthquake and Volcano, Head of Gwangju Local Meteorological Administration, Director of Climate Science, and Head of Seoul Metropolitan Meteorological Administration.
In particular, the appointment of a female Administrator is the first since the government was established in 1948. There has never been a female head of the Korea Meteorological Administration, which was launched in 1990, nor one during the previous Central Meteorological Office era. Jo Joo-young, who served as Vice Administrator of the Korea Meteorological Administration from 2013 to 2014, was the highest-ranking woman in the organization.
The presidential office explained the background of this Administrator appointment as that of a 'weather expert with experience who can detect various climate crisis phenomena threatening public safety and contribute to protecting citizens' lives with scientific predictive information.'
