In Seoul and Seogwipo, Jeju, the number of tropical nights in July was the highest on record. As August begins, the heat wave and tropical nights are expected to continue for a while.
According to the Korea Meteorological Administration on the 1st, this July, the count of tropical nights in Seoul was recorded at 23 days. This is the highest number of tropical nights for July since monitoring began in 1908. A tropical night is when the lowest nighttime temperature does not drop below 25 degrees.
Seogwipo in Jeju also set a record. Seogwipo had 27 days of tropical nights in July, the most since weather observations began in 1961. The previous record holder was also July 2023 (27 days), but the ranking of weather records is updated with the latest data ranked higher.
The heat wave will persist for a while. The Korea Meteorological Administration noted, "Typically, temperatures rise more in August than in July, thus entering the actual 'period of heat waves' this month."
On August 1, the maximum daytime temperature is expected to be between 30 and 37 degrees. In Jeongeup, North Jeolla Province, and Gyeongsan, North Gyeongsang Province, the daytime temperature could reach up to 37 degrees. The expected maximum temperatures in major cities are ▲Seoul, Daejeon, Daegu 36 degrees ▲Gwangju 35 degrees ▲Incheon 34 degrees ▲Ulsan, Busan 32 degrees.
Rain is forecasted for Jeju Island on the 3rd and 4th, and for the central region on the 6th and 7th. However, officials from the Korea Meteorological Administration explained, "While humidity is expected to remain high, it does not seem that the perceived temperature will drop," and added, "It remains a fact that the heat will continue this week and next week."
