A 'Level 2 Fire Response' was issued at 8:32 a.m. on the 20th in the Gapyeong County area of Gyeonggi Province, where heavy rain fell overnight. Level 2 Fire Response is an emergency response stage issued during medium-scale disaster situations that cannot be handled by the capabilities of the local fire station alone.
The Fire Department noted, 'Given that multiple casualties are expected in Gapyeong County, it has issued a Level 2 Fire Response and is assessing the scale of available firefighting resources.'
According to the Fire Department, as of 11 a.m. on the same day, there were 2 deaths and 2 missing persons reported in Gapyeong County, Gyeonggi Province. So far, 47 people have been rescued, and 8 are uncontactable. The police and fire authorities are conducting search operations for the missing, but difficulties are being encountered due to the rising water from the heavy rainfall.
At 2:40 a.m. on the same day, a flood warning was issued in the Daebogo area of the Jojeongcheon Stream in Gapyeong County. The water level exceeded the serious stage of 6.4 meters at around 3:20 a.m., rising to 9.2 meters, ultimately causing the Jojeongcheon Stream to overflow. Gapyeong County promptly issued an evacuation order, moving residents of 15 households around Daebogo to nearby highland greenhouses.
According to the Korea Meteorological Administration, around 3:30 a.m., rain fell at a rate of 76 mm per hour in Jojeong-myeon, Gapyeong County, Gyeonggi Province. The cumulative rainfall by 9:30 a.m. on that day was 197.5 mm. The heavy rain advisories issued for the Gapyeong area have now been lifted.
