Heavy rain fell overnight, mainly in the Chungcheong and Jeolla regions. Currently, a heavy rain warning is still in effect for the western part of the Korean Peninsula. The rain is expected to gradually expand to other areas. In particular, a 'severe downpour' with up to 80 mm per hour is forecasted for the Jeonnam and Gyeongnam regions tonight, so precautions against safety accidents are advised.
According to the Korea Meteorological Administration, as of 10 a.m. on the 18th, a heavy rain warning is in effect for Heuksando and Hongdo in Jeonnam, while heavy rain advisories are in effect for Gyeonggi Province, Chungnam, and Chungbuk, including Cheongju, Boeun, Okcheon, Yeongdong, Jincheon, Eumseong, Jeungpyeong, Jeonnam, Jeonbuk, Gyeongnam, Seoul, Incheon, Daejeon, Gwangju, Busan, Ulsan, and Sejong. However, some areas are experiencing a temporary break in rainfall.
As time passes, the areas receiving rain are expected to gradually expand to the eastern part of the Korean Peninsula. Rainfall advisories have been issued for Gangwon, Chungbuk, Gyeongbuk, Daegu, and Jeju later this afternoon and tonight.
The Korea Meteorological Administration noted, "Strong rain, accompanied by gusts and thunder, will begin in the Chungcheong and Jeolla regions, and some areas in the Gyeongsang region will also experience heavy rain." The agency further stated, "This rain will be very intense and voluminous in narrow areas, with considerable variation in rainfall amounts and intensity depending on the region, and some areas may show intermittent breaks, so please refer to the latest weather information."
Many areas, particularly in Jeonnam and Gyeongnam, are expected to receive heavy rain tonight and into tomorrow. In particular, a severe downpour of up to 80 mm per hour is anticipated in the Jeolla and Gyeongsang regions in the southern part of the country tonight.
The amount of rain expected to fall over the next two days until the 19th is ▲ Gwangju, Jeonnam, Busan, Ulsan, and Gyeongnam 100-200 mm (up to more than 300 mm) ▲ Chungcheong, Jeonbuk, Daegu, and Gyeongbuk 50-150 mm (up to more than 200 mm) ▲ Capital region, Gangwon inland, and Gangwon mountains 30-100 mm (up to more than 150 mm in southern Gyeonggi and central-southern inland Gangwon) ▲ Jeju (excluding the northern part) 20-80 mm (up to more than 150 mm in mountains) ▲ Northern Jeju, Ulleungdo, and Dokdo 10-60 mm ▲ Gangwon East Coast 10-50 mm ▲ West Sea Five Islands 5-20 mm.
By the afternoon of Saturday, the 19th, most of the rain will have stopped. In the capital region and Gangwon, occasional rain is expected until the morning of Sunday, the 20th. After the rain stops, a heatwave with a perceived temperature exceeding 33 degrees is forecasted. However, occasional showers may still occur.
