The basic fare for subway transportation cards in the capital region will increase by 150 won starting from the first train on June 28.
According to the city of Seoul on the 29th, the city held a recent meeting with Gyeonggi Province, Incheon City, and Korail (Korea Railroad Corporation) to implement a unified transfer discount system for public transportation, agreeing on the subway fare adjustment plan. Once the subsequent procedures, such as board meetings for local transportation agencies like the Seoul Transportation Corporation, are completed, the fare increase timing will be confirmed.
If the adjusted fares are applied, the current basic fare of 1,400 won for subway transportation cards in the capital region will rise by 150 won to 1,550 won. The fare for teenagers will increase from 800 won to 900 won, while children's fares will rise from 500 won to 550 won, each by 100 won and 50 won, respectively.
When purchasing with cash, the general fare for a single-ride ticket and the fare for teenagers will increase from 1,500 won to 1,650 won, and the fare for children will rise from 500 won to 550 won.
Earlier, the city raised the basic subway fare from 1,250 won to 1,400 won on October 7, 2023, to improve the large deficits of the Seoul Transportation Corporation. Initially, there were plans to raise the fare by 300 won all at once; however, considering the trend of freezing public utility rates, it was decided to increase it by 150 won in two stages.
