The government commemorated the first 'Workers' Day for Industrial Accidents' since it was designated as a legal memorial day. According to the government on the 28th, officials from the Ministry of Employment and Labor, members of the National Assembly's Environment and Labor Committee, and leaders of worker organizations for industrial accident victims visited the 'Monument for Victims of Industrial Accidents' at Boramae Park in Seoul to pay their respects.
Every year, April 28 is Workers' Day for Industrial Accidents. The Industrial Accident Compensation Insurance Act was amended on Oct. 22 last year, designating it as a legal memorial day.
At the ceremony held that day at the Korea Federation of Small and Medium Enterprises in Yeouido, Seoul, 13 individuals received government awards. These are given to workers who overcame industrial accidents and successfully returned to society, as well as those who have taken the lead in improving their rights.
The President's Citation was awarded to Lee Sang-woo, director of the Coexistence Vocational Rehabilitation Center. After sustaining a lower body paralysis due to an accidental industrial accident and receiving a first-grade disability rating, he established the Association of Industrial Accident Disabled Individuals to support fellow industrial accident workers facing similar challenges in returning to the workforce by providing employment assistance and creating job opportunities. The Prime Minister's Citation was awarded to Jin Myeong-hwan, the executive representative of the Korea Industrial Accident Central Corporation Association, and Song Jae-cheol, a professor at the Hanyang University College of Medicine.
The government designated the period from that day until May 2 as Remembrance Week, planning to conduct industrial accident prevention education and campaigns.
