On Friday, the 18th, the daytime temperature exceeded 30 degrees for the first time this year.
According to the Korea Meteorological Administration's disaster weather information system, Gumi in North Gyeongsang Province recorded the highest temperature at 30.6 degrees as of 3:30 p.m. The temperature in Uljin, North Gyeongsang Province, also reached 30.5 degrees. This marked the first time this year that any area officially exceeded 30 degrees.
Although it did not reach 30 degrees, the Yeongnam region was generally quite warm. Temperatures were 29.9 degrees in Gyeongju, 29.7 degrees in Pohang, 29.4 degrees in Daegu, and 29.3 degrees in Uiseong. In addition, the temperature in Gangneung, Gangwon Province, rose to 29.5 degrees. Meanwhile, Seoul recorded 23.3 degrees.
However, the timing of the first occurrence of a maximum daytime temperature of over 30 degrees was about 4 to 5 days later than last year. Last year, the first instance was on April 13, when the temperature in Yeongwol, Gangwon Province, rose to 30.3 degrees. The temperature in Yeongwol even soared to 32.2 degrees the following day.
The Korea Meteorological Administration noted that 'a combination of strong sunshine, atmospheric stagnation, and ground heating' influenced the temperatures. This weekend, the temperatures will decrease somewhat compared to today. However, it is expected that daytime temperatures will remain 2 to 6 degrees higher than normal for the time being.
There is a forecast for rain this weekend. Starting from the evening of this day, some areas in North Gyeongsang Province will experience showers, and from the morning of Saturday, the 19th, rain will begin in the capital area and inland mountain regions of Gangwon Province, spreading to most areas of the country in the afternoon. Most areas will see rain stop on Sunday, the 20th, but some regions in Gyeongsang Province may continue to experience rain into that morning.
