Police announced that on the 7th, regarding the security of former President Yoon Suk-yeol's residence, they plan to mobilize police forces for support if requested by the Presidential Security Service.
Park Hyun-soo, acting chief of the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency, noted at a press briefing that “if (former President Yoon) requests assistance from us after moving to his residence, we will mobilize police forces accordingly to support the security of the residence.”
Former President Yoon, who was ousted on the 4th, is expected to leave the presidential residence in Hannam-dong, Yongsan-gu, Seoul, as early as the 9th. There is a strong possibility that former President Yoon will move to his residence at Acro Vista in Seocho-dong, Seocho-gu, Seoul, where he stayed until the Hannam-dong residence was ready after his inauguration.
Recently, police have restricted gatherings at the Acro Vista main gate, which is located within 100 meters of the Seoul Central District Court, to avoid influencing the trial, as former President Yoon is undergoing trial for insurrection and is currently being tried at the Seoul Central District Court.
Even if a president is ousted during their term, protection is maintained for up to 10 years. According to the law regarding protection for the president, the Presidential Security Service can provide security activities for former presidents and their spouses for up to 15 years after leaving office unless the former president personally refuses. If they leave before the end of their term, the period is reduced to 5 years, but it can be extended for another 5 years.
Acting Chief Park stated regarding the operations of the 202nd Police Security Unit, which is responsible for perimeter security and guarding the presidential office, that “if (former President Yoon moves) his residence, it will not be included in the security target, so there may be some changes,” adding that “security operations for the presidential office will continue.”
