It was reported on the 3rd that the company which received the most 'planned supervision' from the Ministry of Employment and Labor regarding construction companies where worker deaths occurred last year was Daewoo E&C. At Daewoo E&C's sites, it is said that 5 people died in 4 accidents last year.
The planned supervision by the Ministry of Employment and Labor checks for violations of the Industrial Safety and Health Act at the workplaces of corporations where fatal accidents occur. In the case of construction companies, those which have experienced serious accidents among the top 1,000 comprehensive construction firms in terms of construction capacity are subject to planned supervision.
The Ministry of Employment and Labor conducted a total of 15 planned supervisions of domestic construction companies last year. Daewoo E&C had the most planned supervisions, with 3. At Daewoo E&C's business sites, a total of 5 people died in 4 accidents that occurred last year in February, March, June, and August.
Following Daewoo E&C, Hyundai E&C and POSCO E&C each received planned supervision twice. Additionally, Hyundai Engineering, GS Engineering and Construction, KOLON GLOBAL, and Hanwha are reported to have each received planned supervision once.
Meanwhile, so far this year, Hyundai Engineering is the only construction company that has undergone planned supervision by the Ministry of Employment and Labor. In the past month, 3 fatal accidents have occurred at Hyundai Engineering's construction sites, resulting in 6 fatalities. Following the collapse accident at the Seoul-Sejong Expressway construction site in February, where 4 people died, there were 2 accidents at an apartment construction site in March, leading to 2 deaths.
The planned supervision by the Ministry of Employment and Labor is carried out in phases. Initially, when a fatal accident occurs, warnings and advisories are issued. Once 2 fatal accidents occur, planned supervision is conducted at around 10% of the nationwide construction sites of the relevant construction company. If a third fatal accident occurs, the planned supervision target expands to 20% of the nationwide construction sites.
