The Ministry of the Interior and Safety selected four exemplary local governments for the integrated control of closed-circuit television (CCTV).
The Ministry of the Interior and Safety held the first local government CCTV integrated control best practices contest and announced the final judging results on the 20th.
This contest was organized to share exemplary cases of local governments utilizing CCTV, a key safety facility in the region. The Ministry of the Interior and Safety selected a total of four cases, including one grand award, one best award, and two excellence awards after joint evaluations and final site assessments.
The grand award was given to Seocho District in Seoul. Seocho District has established and operates a real-time congestion control system utilizing artificial intelligence (AI). Additionally, it introduced the 'Dong Residents' Center Video Control' system to verify scenes using CCTV in the event of a disaster at the dong (neighborhood) level. It is noted that establishing and operating a real-time CCTV video control room in the Dong residents' center is the first of its kind in the country.
Jeju was selected for the best award. Together with three police stations in the province, it established an 'AI Missing Person Tracking Platform' that supports searches for missing persons based on CCTV footage. It is explained that using this platform can reduce the time needed to visually review 100 hours of CCTV footage from 25 hours to just 10 minutes.
In addition, Gyeonggi Province and Gunsan City in North Jeolla Province received the excellence awards. Gyeonggi Province has a 'Gyeonggi Province 360° Smart Video Center' that integrates and manages CCTV footage from over 170,000 cameras in the province's disaster safety headquarters along with disaster management facility information. Gunsan City established a control system that automatically tracks and detects specific sounds, such as screams or shouts, to inform control personnel, compensating for the limitations of visual-based monitoring.
Lee Se-young, head of the Disaster Safety Information Communications Bureau at the Ministry of the Interior and Safety, said, 'We will spare no support to ensure that integrated control of local government CCTV can further serve as a protector of public safety.'
