The Constitutional Court announced on the 19th that it would not disclose the date for the ruling on the impeachment trial of President Yoon Suk-yeol. On this day, Cheon Jae-hyun, a spokesperson for the Constitutional Court, noted to ChosunBiz, "It seems difficult to announce the date for President Yoon's impeachment ruling today." The president's legal team also stated, "We have not yet been notified of the ruling date."
Accordingly, a decision on President Yoon's impeachment is expected to be announced after next week. In the past two presidential impeachment trials, the ruling dates were determined 2 to 3 days before the announcement. During the impeachment trial of former President Park Geun-hye, the date was set two days in advance, while for former President Roh Moo-hyun, it was designated three days ahead. Based on this precedent, it is unlikely that the ruling on President Yoon's impeachment will occur by this Friday (21st).
Meanwhile, the ruling for the appeal of Lee Jae-myung, the leader of the Democratic Party, regarding allegations of election law violations is scheduled for next Wednesday (26th). In the first trial, Lee was sentenced to one year in prison with a two-year probation. If the same sentence is handed down in the appeal and upheld by the Supreme Court, Lee will be deprived of the right to run for office for ten years.
A legal expert said, "The Constitutional Court may set the date for President Yoon's impeachment ruling after the verdict on Lee's appeal regarding election law violations."
