The Ministry of Employment and Labor reported on the 12th that it has identified 16 corporations that violated labor laws by treating regular employees differently because they are non-regular workers. A total of 60 violations were detected at these corporations.
The Ministry of Employment and Labor received tips on 20 corporations discriminating against non-regular workers through an anonymous reporting center operated last July. Accordingly, it conducted labor inspections at the business sites from September to November last year.
Discrimination against non-regular workers was carried out by not providing holiday bonuses, welfare points, congratulatory money, and summer vacation expenses. Company A provides annual welfare points of 2.1 million won and a wedding congratulatory payment of 1 million won to regular employees. In contrast, it was found that similar work was performed by temporary workers who were given fewer welfare points or no congratulatory money.
In another example, Company B gives holiday bonuses of 1.5 million won annually to regular employees in charge of fieldwork while providing 400,000 to 600,000 won to temporary workers.
Additionally, there were business sites that paid wages below the minimum wage or failed to adequately provide overtime pay, annual leave pay, and retirement benefits.
Minister Kim Moon-soo said, “To overcome the polarization of the labor market, anyone must be justly compensated according to their work without being discriminated against based on their employment type,” and noted, “In addition to continuing labor inspections to eradicate discrimination against non-regular workers, we will also continue to improve awareness and practices on-site through consulting and other measures.”
