The middle school student who attacked lawmaker Bae Hyun-jin with a stone has received a suspended prison sentence in the first trial.
According to the legal community on the 13th, the 26th Criminal Division of the Seoul Central District Court (Director General Lee Hyun-gyeong) sentenced a teenage student, identified as A, to one year in prison, suspended for two years, for the charge of causing special injury.
The court noted, 'Considering the method of the crime, the injured area, and the severity of the injury after repeatedly striking the victim's head with a stone, the nature of the offense is poor,' explaining the reason for the sentencing.
A was indicted for allegedly striking lawmaker Bae about 15 times on the head with a stone around 5:12 p.m. on Jan. 25 last year, on the first floor of a building in Sinsa-dong, Gangnam-gu.
On the day of the incident, A stated to the prosecution that he went to the building to meet a celebrity hopeful, identified as B, and inadvertently encountered lawmaker Bae, committing the act unconsciously.
Subsequently, during the trial process, A claimed to have been in a state of severe impairment in judgment and decision-making; however, the court did not accept this argument.
The court dismissed the prosecution's request for treatment orders, stating that 'A is relatively stable mentally.' Previously, the prosecution had sought a long-term sentence of four years and a short term of two years, alongside a request for treatment orders.
Meanwhile, lawmaker Bae was hospitalized for treatment due to injuries, including a lacerated scalp, from the attack.
