The Ministry of the Interior and Safety announced that as heavy snowfall warnings have expanded from the southern regions to the central regions, the Central Disaster and Safety Countermeasures Headquarters will operate at Stage 1 starting at 7 a.m. on the 12th. The level of the heavy snowfall warning has risen from attention to caution.
According to the Korea Meteorological Administration, snow or rain is falling in most areas nationwide this day. It is expected that about 1 to 3 cm of snow will fall per hour in regions such as Jeolla, Gyeongsang, Gyeonggi Province, and Chungbuk, where heavy snowfall warnings are in effect.
Snow is expected to continue until this evening. The expected snowfall is 3 to 8 cm in the capital region and Gangwon Province, 1 to 8 cm in Chungcheong and Gyeongsang regions, and 1 to 5 cm in Jeolla region. It is anticipated that up to 40 mm of rain will pour in Jeolla and Jeju provinces.
Accordingly, the Central Disaster and Safety Countermeasures Headquarters ordered relevant agencies to thoroughly respond to prevent public inconvenience and damage due to the heavy snowfall.
Minister (acting) Ko Gi-dong stated, "As snow and rain are falling nationwide, relevant agencies should take all necessary measures to prevent safety accidents, such as multiple collisions due to road freezing," and urged the public to check weather conditions and traffic information, and to pay special attention to traffic safety during their commutes.
