Two fishing boats have run aground off Jeju, resulting in the deaths of 2 out of a total of 15 crew members onboard, while 2 others are missing and currently being searched for.

According to the Jeju Coast Guard, a report was received around 9:24 a.m. on the 1st that a fishing boat A (32 tons, 7 crew members) and a fishing boat B (29 tons, 8 crew members) had run aground on the tidal flats near Usu Island in Gujwa-eup, Jeju.

The coast guard dispatched patrol vessels and rescue personnel to the scene, and as of 3 p.m. that day, they had rescued 13 of the 15 crew members, with 2 people still missing.

Among the 13 rescued individuals, 2 have died. The captain of boat A, a Namsung man in his 50s, was transported to the hospital in cardiac arrest but was pronounced dead. A crew member from boat B, a 40-year-old Indonesian, was found in cardiac arrest during the shoreline search about 4 hours after the incident and was taken to the hospital, where he was also pronounced dead.

Another individual was unconscious and was taken to the hospital but is reported to be stable, while the remaining 10 showed symptoms of hypothermia but were found to be in good health otherwise.

The captains of boats A and B are both Korean, while the other crew members have been identified as foreigners, including Vietnamese and Indonesians.

The coast guard is currently conducting a search for the missing individuals.
