On the 15th, a man in his 60s attempted self-immolation near the Corruption Investigation Office for High-ranking Officials in Gwacheon. The man was severely injured and transported to the hospital.
According to the fire authorities, around 8:05 p.m. on the same day, nine reports were received indicating that a loud bang was heard and a fire broke out near a tree in the park next to the parking lot across from the Government Gwacheon Complex.
Firefighters who responded to the report arrived at the scene six minutes later and found a man in his 60s, identified as A, collapsed and unconscious. It was determined that A attempted self-immolation with four portable butane canisters and had wires wrapped around his body. The fire authorities estimated that A sustained third-degree burns over his entire body.
The fire was completely extinguished about 16 minutes after the reports were received, around 8:21 p.m. Firefighters started to remove the wires wrapped around A’s body at 8:17 p.m. and completed the operation in four minutes.
A was transported to Pyeongchon Hallym University Hospital for initial treatment and is expected to be transferred to Hallym University Hangang Sacred Heart Hospital, a burn specialist hospital.
After A attempted self-immolation, the fire spread to the surrounding area, destroying one tree and approximately 3.3 square meters of grass.
