In 2017, the robotic rover Curiosity captured this 360-degree panorama while exploring the red planet, Mars. It is referred to as "Ogunquit Beach" after a beach of the same name on Earth, and there are traces indicating that it was submerged in water in the past, as well as evidence that it was once the shore of an ancient lake.
The bright peak visible in the center of the background is the summit of Mount Sharp, located at the center of Gale Crater. The dark sandy area in the foreground has been sampled and analyzed, while the light-colored bedrock is comprised of sediments that have accumulated on what is now the dry lake bed.
