Chairperson Choi Won-ho of the Nuclear Safety And Security Commission visited Shin Hanul Unit 2 on the 20th to inspect the status of safety management following recent safety issues.
Shin Hanul Unit 2 in Uljin County, Gyeongbuk, was manually shut down on the 12th due to a reactor coolant leakage, and on the 14th, a radiation alarm was triggered inside the reactor containment structure. Chairperson Choi said, “Given that incidents have occurred successively at Shin Hanul Unit 2, it is essential to thoroughly analyze the causes of these incidents and to establish comprehensive measures to prevent recurrence.”
Earlier, the Nuclear Safety And Security Commission approved the accident management plan for Shin Hanul Units 1 and 2 during its 206th meeting on Jan. 9. The accident management plan is a document that defines the strategies, implementation systems, and various measures needed to prevent the escalation of incidents and mitigate their impacts to restore safe conditions in the event of a nuclear power plant accident.
Chairperson Choi noted, “It is crucial that the newly introduced accident management plan is effectively integrated with existing emergency response systems. Furthermore, please continue to refine the application plans for the accident management plan on site while systematizing it and strengthening implementation training.”
