The Nuclear Safety And Security Commission announced on the 14th that it held a ceremony for the opening of the Saewool Nuclear Power Plant regional office in Ulsan's Uljoo County. Chairperson Choi Won-ho and Commissioners Kim Kyun-tae, Kim Gi-soo, Park Cheon-hong, Lee Kang-geun, Je Moo-sung, and Jin Jae-yong attended the ceremony, along with Ulsan Uljoo County Congressman Seo Beom-soo, Ulsan Deputy Mayor Ahn Seung-dae, and Uljoo County Mayor Lee Soon-geol.

The Commission has conducted safety regulations for both the Gori Nuclear Power Plant and the Saewool Nuclear Power Plant through the Gori Nuclear Power Plant regional office. However, due to ongoing requests from local residents for an independent regional office dedicated to the Saewool Nuclear Power Plant, the Saewool regional office was established on the 25th of last month.

The Commission noted that with the opening of the Saewool Nuclear Power Plant regional office, it is expected to enable close-field safety regulation and immediate incident response and prevention for the Saewool Nuclear Power Plant. The Saewool Nuclear Power Plant regional office will also actively carry out local communication tasks to ensure that resident feedback and discussions can take place continuously in connection with the Saewool Nuclear Safety Council.

Prior to the ceremony, Chairperson Choi and the Commissioners visited the Uljoo Radiation Disaster Response Command Center to inspect disaster response facilities and equipment, as well as to receive reports on emergency response training plans. In addition, they conducted on-site inspections of the primary control room for Saewool Unit 3, which is expected to undergo an operating license review this year, as well as the spent fuel storage pools and alternative AC emergency diesel generators.

Chairperson Choi stated, “The Commission will conduct inspections more swiftly and thoroughly through the Saewool Nuclear Power Plant regional office to ensure safer operations of the Saewool Nuclear Power Plant.”
