The reason for cultivating an organic vineyard is simple. Organic grapes produce the most pure expression that the variety and land can show.
The organic wine brand Bonterra, based in Mendocino, California, has "the honest expression of terroir" as its core value. The name itself means "good (bon) land (terra)" in Latin. Founded by the Fetzer family in 1987 based on the philosophy that good wine comes from good land, it is the first organic winery in California and also the largest winery certified organic by the U.S. government.
Organic wine shows a unique difference in taste and aroma compared to traditionally produced wine. This is due to the differences in the grape cultivation process. Since organic grapes are grown without chemical fertilizers and pesticides, they are relatively smaller and denser than regular grapes. Therefore, the inherent flavor of the grapes, reflecting regional characteristics such as soil and climate, is better expressed.
Regular wine contains several synthetic additives, leading to jokes like, "We have entered an era where wine can be made without grapes." In contrast, organic wine offers a clean and pure taste. For some consumers, it may come across as less refined. However, in recent years, the demand for organic wine has steadily increased, aligning with trends that emphasize health and sustainability.
Like its name, which means "good land," Bonterra seeks harmony with nature and practices sustainable wine production.
For example, every spring, crops such as legumes, brassicas, and herbs are planted between the vineyards. This enhances biodiversity, providing habitats for beneficial organisms, including insects, and maintaining ecological balance around the vineyards. During winter, sheep are brought to graze in the vineyards in collaboration with local shepherds. The sheep eat crops and weeds, adding vitality to the soil. This helps create a living soil system without chemical fertilizers.
This method also helps reduce tractor traffic, thereby decreasing fuel consumption and carbon emissions. In addition, Bonterra incorporates various eco-friendly technologies, such as solar power generation, water usage reduction, and grape skin recycling, to lead in ecosystem protection. These efforts have earned Bonterra various eco-friendly farming and management certifications, including California Certified Organic Farmers (CCOF), B-Corp (Benefit Corporation), Regenerative Organic Certification, and True Zero Waste.
Mendocino, Bonterra's hometown, is located to the north of well-known wine regions Napa and Sonoma. It features a climate influenced by the Pacific Ocean, characterized by warm days and cool nights. This allows grapes to ripen slowly, optimizing the natural environment for wine cultivation.
The unique terroir, composed of various soil layers, is a key factor in determining the rich taste and aroma of Bonterra wine. The soil, which is a mix of clay and gravel, helps grapevines establish deep roots. This provides an environment where grapevines can grow healthily. The gravel ensures good drainage and is rich in nutrients, making it ideal for producing high-quality grapes.
Notable wines from Bonterra include Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Estate Collection Cabernet Sauvignon, and The McNab. Among these, Bonterra Cabernet Sauvignon received a score of 92 from the global wine media, Wine Enthusiast. A wine rated above 90 signifies exceptional quality. It suggests a high level of balance and complexity and indicates that the drinking experience is likely to be special and satisfying.
Bonterra Cabernet Sauvignon exhibits a deep garnet color. It offers aromas of black cherry, black currant, and spice, along with flavors of dark fruit, leather, tobacco, and pencil shavings. After fermentation in stainless steel tanks, it is aged in French and American oak BARRELS for 14 to 18 months, which adds notes of vanilla and toast.
It has a suitable weight, with well-rounded tannins and acidity that create a perfect structure. Its high aging potential allows it to develop deeper flavors over time. It pairs well with baked brie cheese, herb-based pasta, and rustic breadsticks.
Bonterra Cabernet Sauvignon won the "Best of 2025" award at the 2025 Korea Wine & Spirits Awards among new world red wines. It is imported into the country through Ayoung FBC.
