CJ CheilJedang has completed a life cycle assessment (LCA) at major establishments in its bio division, accelerating its global environmental, social, and governance (ESG) efforts.
CJ CheilJedang noted on the 15th that it has established an LCA calculation process for 41 products produced at seven establishments in five countries, including the United States, Brazil, Indonesia, China, and Malaysia, and has completed a third-party verification. This marks the first instance of LCA verification conducted not on individual products, but on an establishment basis in the domestic food and green bio industries.
LCA quantifies materials and energy inputs, as well as waste emissions throughout the entire process from raw material procurement to product manufacturing, transportation, use, and disposal to assess environmental impact. The third-party verification was conducted by DNV, a global energy and environmental certification body.
DNV carried out feasibility assessments based on key environmental impact indicators, such as climate change and resource depletion, for each product in accordance with the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) standards, specifically through the 'cradle-to-gate' process.
The verified products include the next-generation seasoning material Taste & Rich (TnR), which is produced using a differentiated natural fermentation method, as well as feed-grade amino acids such as lysine, tryptophan, and arginine.
In particular, for feed-grade amino acids, reliable data can now be provided by adhering to the LCA calculation guidelines developed by the European Union (EU), which is strengthening its environmental regulations. CJ CheilJedang plans to proactively respond to the needs of global clients who prioritize sustainable management and to further solidify its position in the global green bio market through this LCA feasibility assessment.
