The government said it will take stern action if it detects acts that disrupt the foreign exchange market.
Earlier, the government said it would ask for an investigation into claims spreading via YouTube and messengers—"forced dollar sales mobilizing the government's Emergency Fiscal and Economic Order" and "limits on the dollar exchange volume at the four major commercial banks"—calling them "clear fake news," and it has in fact filed a criminal complaint with police.
On Apr. 3, Moon Ji-sung, director-general for international economic policy at the Ministry of Finance and Economy, presided over a meeting of the task force responding to illegal foreign exchange transactions and said, "Spreading baseless fake news in an extraordinary crisis can cause market anxiety and undermine policy credibility, which is a grave matter," adding, "When market-disrupting acts such as the spread of fake news are detected, the task force will share the information and take stern measures, including filing police complaints."
