It was found that 22 business sites, including Samkang S&C, had their sentences finalized and notified in the second half of last year for serious industrial accidents.
The Ministry of Employment and Labor (MOEL) on the 31st published that business sites where serious industrial accidents occurred between July and December last year and violations of the Serious Accidents Punishment Act were finalized are 22 locations: Samkang S&C, Synergy Construction, Baron Construction, Yeongnam Dyeing, Useong Chemical, Hanwon Construction Group, LDS Industrial Development, Youngjin, Hanyoung P&S, Geonryung Construction, Gangnam, Jigu Construction, TNG Construction, Jeil Industry, Taein Industry, Gaya Safety Corporation, Jinhyung Construction, Bethel Logistics, Brotech, Korea Concrete, YMT, and M-Tech.
Among the managerial persons in charge at these business sites, one received an actual prison term, 22 received suspended prison sentences, and one received a suspended prison sentence and a fine.
At Samkang S&C, a mid-sized ship parts manufacturer, fatal accidents occurred in succession in February 2022 following March and April 2021. For the former CEO, a person surnamed Song, a two-year prison term was finalized in September last year. It is the second case in which a managerial person in charge had an actual prison term finalized by the Supreme Court since the Serious Accidents Punishment Act took effect. The Samkang S&C corporate entity had a fine of 2 billion won finalized, which is the highest amount among serious accident fines imposed to date.
Since September 2023, the ministry has been publishing, on a semiannual basis, business sites where serious industrial accidents occurred and sentences for violations of the Serious Accidents Punishment Act were finalized and notified. Disclosed are the names of the business sites, the date, place, and details of the accidents, and the records of serious accidents at the corporations over the past five years. It was found that a total of 44 business sites have been cumulatively published over the past three years since the Serious Accidents Punishment Act took effect.
