Starting early on Wednesday the 3rd, snow is expected mainly along the west coasts of South Chungcheong and Jeolla and in the mountainous areas of Jeju. In Seoul, the "first snow" is expected on Thursday the 4th.
The Korea meteorological Administration said at an as-needed forecast briefing on the 2nd that "from early morning to morning on the 3rd, there is a chance of locally heavy snow near the west coasts of South Chungcheong and Jeolla." The expected snowfall is ▲ 3–8 cm on the west coasts of South Chungcheong and Jeolla ▲ 1–5 cm in the inland areas of South Chungcheong and Jeolla ▲ 3–10 cm in the mountainous areas of Jeju and on Ulleungdo.
The Korea meteorological Administration explained that this snowfall will be caused by the sea-air temperature difference (haegicha), the difference in temperature between the sea and the atmosphere. Haegicha is a phenomenon in which very cold air passes over a relatively warm sea, gathers water vapor, and forms snow clouds. An official at the Korea meteorological Administration said, "Air colder than minus 35 degrees is passing at an altitude of 5 km, and if this cold air strengthens, snowfall along the coast could be adjusted upward."
On the 4th, flurries will continue until the morning near the coasts where it has been snowing, and in the afternoon, heavy snow is expected in the central region. The timing of the first snow in Seoul is expected to be from the afternoon to the evening of the 4th. The expected snowfall is ▲ around 1 cm in Seoul, Incheon, and western Gyeonggi ▲ 1–5 cm in eastern Gyeonggi and Yeongseo, Gangwon. Along the east coast, located to the right of the Taebaek Mountains, the air is expected to remain dry for the time being.
The cold will continue until Friday the 5th, and temperatures are expected to gradually recover over the weekend. An official at the Korea meteorological Administration explained, "In the case of Seoul, weekend temperatures could be around 3 degrees higher than the average for this time of year."
Meanwhile, from 9 p.m. this evening, a cold wave advisory is set to take effect in some areas, including Gyeonggi, Gangwon, North Chungcheong and South Chungcheong, North Gyeongsang, and Seoul. Areas under the cold wave advisory are ▲ in Gyeonggi: Ansan, Dongducheon, Yeoncheon, Pocheon, Gapyeong, Goyang, Yangju, Uijeongbu, Paju, Guri, Namyangju, Gunpo, Hanam, Yongin, Icheon, Hwaseong, Yeoju, Gwangju, Yangpyeong ▲ in Gangwon: excluding lowland Gangneung, lowland Donghae, and lowland Samcheok ▲ in South Chungcheong: Taean, Dangjin, Hongseong ▲ in North Chungcheong: Goesan, Chungju, Jecheon, Danyang ▲ in North Gyeongsang: Mungyeong, Yeongju, lowland Bonghwa, and the northeastern mountainous area of North Gyeongsang ▲ in Seoul: the northeastern, southwestern, and northwestern sectors.
