On the afternoon of the 21st, the Democratic Party of Korea and five opposition parties submitted an impeachment motion against Acting President Choi Sang-mok, who is also the Minister of Economy and Finance, to the National Assembly's legislation office. This marks the 30th impeachment motion initiated by the Democratic Party during the Yoon Suk-yeol administration.
The Democratic Party of Korea, Justice Party, Progressive Party, Social Democratic Party, and Basic Income Party cited reasons for the impeachment of Acting President Choi, including ▲ accomplice charges in the emergency martial law insurrection on Dec. 3 ▲ refusal to appoint candidate for Constitutional Court Justice Ma Eon-hyeok ▲ refusal to appoint candidate for Supreme Court Justice Ma Yong-joo ▲ refusal to request recommendations for a permanent special prosecutor.
Kim Yong-min, the Democratic Party's floor policy chief, said, “The executive branch is blatantly ignoring and contempting the Constitutional Court's judgment,” adding, “We are submitting the impeachment motion to correct this.”
Kim, the floor policy chief, added the reason for submitting the impeachment motion, saying, “Contempting the Constitutional Court's ruling is tantamount to contempting the Constitution itself and further is seen as denial and contempt against the very existence of the Republic of Korea,” emphasizing, “This is regarded as a very serious matter to correct.”
However, regarding concerns about a vacuum in economic leadership, he stated, “I clearly say that Acting President Choi is making matters worse regarding economic issues,” and, “Upholding the constitutional order is the most important.”
He also mentioned regarding the timing of the impeachment vote, “There is a plenary session scheduled for the 27th, but the schedule for the (impeachment motion against Acting President Choi) vote is being discussed with the Speaker's office.”
