The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport's Metropolitan Transport Commission announced on the 19th that it has approved the phase 1 implementation plan for the construction project of the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system connecting Seongnam City and Bogjeong Station in Songpa District, Seoul.

The project aims to strengthen public transport connectivity between Seoul and the metropolitan area by introducing BRT over a total distance of 10.2 kilometers from Namhansanseong in Seongnam City to Bogjeong Station in Songpa District, Seoul. The total project cost is approximately 46 billion won and will be implemented in two phases.

The phase 1 project will invest a total of 26.8 billion won in the section of Sansungdaero (5.2 kilometers). The main content includes the establishment and improvement of BRT-exclusive roads and 33 stops (16 central stops and 17 existing curbside stops) from Moran Station in Seongnam-dong to the entrance of Namhansanseong in Yangji-dong. Additionally, the traffic and signal systems will be revamped to enhance the public transport usage environment.

The Metropolitan Transport Commission expects that upon completion of phase 1, the travel time from Moran Station to the entrance of Namhansanseong will be reduced from 25 minutes to 15 minutes, and the average travel speed will increase by 7.5 kilometers per hour to 19.9 kilometers per hour.

Phase 1 of the project will begin construction in May and aims to be completed in the first half of 2026. The phase 2 section along Seongnamdaero (5.0 kilometers) is currently undergoing basic and implementation design services, with the implementation plan expected to be approved in the first half of 2026. The Metropolitan Transport Commission plans to push forward with phase 2 over about a year, aiming to commence full operation of the BRT system in the first half of 2027.

Chairman Kang Hee-eop of the Metropolitan Transport Commission remarked, "The Seongnam-Bogjeong BRT project is a significant turning point in establishing a public transport-centered transportation system," and noted, "We will proceed with phase 2 without any delays."
