On the 4th, ahead of the Constitutional Court's ruling on the presidential impeachment trial, major value-added telecom providers such as Naver and Kakao increased their traffic capacity by 3 to 10 times compared to usual.
On the 3rd, according to the information and communication technology (ICT) industry, Naver and Kakao have secured traffic capacity of 3 to 10 times compared to usual to accommodate the surge in usage of key services such as Naver Cafe, KakaoTalk, and news search.
On Dec. 3 last year, there was a precedent for traffic congestion causing access failures to some services such as Naver Cafe when President Yoon Suk-yeol declared a state of emergency, so they noted that they are thoroughly preparing. Kakao is also establishing a response system for stable service operation to cope with traffic surges. They have enhanced monitoring of traffic fluctuations, expanded infrastructure such as servers, and are prepared to respond to emergencies.
To prepare for the expected surge in communication volume due to mass rallies for and against the impeachment scheduled at 11 a.m. on the 4th, the three telecommunications companies are deploying additional mobile base stations and are coordinating with the Korean National Police Agency regarding the safety of personnel on-site. They have already deployed additional mobile and temporary base stations near Gwanghwamun and Anguk Station to respond to previous rallies.
SK Telecom is monitoring the rally situation in areas expected to gather large crowds in real-time and has optimized existing equipment in advance. KT has also completed checks on telecommunication networks in areas with expected population density and has established emergency response systems, including operating an emergency situation room. LG Uplus is periodically monitoring traffic while preparing for unusual situations.
