The Personal Information Protection Commission (PIPC) announced on the 7th that it plans to rapidly conduct a fact-finding inspection of the smart car sector, including BYD, a Chinese smart car that recently entered the domestic market, as privacy protection issues have been raised.
In a press release on the same day, the PIPC noted, "We will take all necessary measures to ensure that the personal information of our information subjects is securely protected and relevant services are activated."
Previously, the PIPC inquired about related matters with BYD Korea after concerns regarding personal information leakage from BYD vehicles were raised.
According to the PIPC, BYD Korea stated, "We have already begun improving our privacy policy and user manual, and we plan to faithfully reflect the Korean Personal Information Protection Act before the product launch in the country."
The PIPC's fact-finding inspection targets are Hyundai, Kia, Tesla, Mercedes-Benz, BMW, and BYD. The fact-finding inspections for the other brands, excluding BYD, have been underway since last year.
