OpenAI is reportedly pursuing a plan to significantly overhaul its artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure strategy and reduce reliance on Microsoft (MS).
According to reports from The Information and other foreign media on the 23rd, OpenAI plans to transfer 75% of its data center capacity to the 'Stargate' project, which is being promoted in collaboration with SoftBank by 2030. There are expected to be significant changes in the relationship with MS, which currently provides most of the computing resources.
For the time being, OpenAI plans to continue expanding its use of MS data centers. However, it is observed that they seek to secure alternative infrastructure providers as long-term forecasts indicate that AI model operating expenses are expected to exceed training expenses.
The company's expense structure is also expected to undergo a drastic change. OpenAI anticipates that cash burn will reach $20 billion (about 28 trillion won) by 2027, which is four times higher than last year. The cost of operating AI models is expected to surpass the cost of AI training.
The 'Stargate' project is expected to be promoted based on SoftBank's large-scale investment. This is seen as part of OpenAI's long-term strategy to establish independent infrastructure, signaling that a reassessment of the partnership with MS is inevitable.
