KBS, MBC, and SBS, the three major terrestrial broadcasters, filed a copyright lawsuit against Naver for using news data without permission for generative artificial intelligence (AI) training.
The Korea Broadcasting Association explained on the 14th that the three terrestrial broadcasters filed a lawsuit for damages against Naver for copyright infringement and violation of the Unfair Competition Prevention Act, claiming that Naver unlawfully used broadcast articles for training on 'HyperClova' and 'HyperClova X.'
The association, which includes 39 terrestrial broadcasters, sent a statement in December 2023 stating that 'separate compensation agreements are necessary to use news content for AI training, and unauthorized use is prohibited,' targeting domestic and international information technology (IT) corporations like Naver, Kakao, and Google Korea.
The association explained that it had demanded compensation for the use of broadcast news data and measures to prevent future infringements against Naver on two occasions, but did not receive a clear response.
A representative of the 'Korea Broadcasting Association AI Task Force (TF),' composed of the member corporations' legal and intellectual property teams, said, 'Starting with Naver, we will sequentially file lawsuits against big tech corporations that have used news data without permission and respond vigorously.'
