An analysis has suggested that the tariff war initiated by President Donald Trump will have a significant impact on his supporters. There are projections that the imposition of reciprocal tariffs will hit industries in regions with a high number of Trump supporters.
The New York Times (NYT) reported on the 16th (local time) that "the effects of retaliatory tariffs imposed by China, Canada, the European Union (EU), and others on the United States will be concentrated in the Midwest, South, and Southeast of the U.S."
It is estimated that 7.75 million Americans will be affected by the retaliatory tariffs. These individuals may even risk losing their jobs as a result of the impact of the retaliatory tariffs.
Of the 7.75 million, more than half, or 4.48 million, live in areas that voted for President Trump in last year's election. The remaining 3.26 million reside in areas that supported Vice President Kamala Harris.
The industry mainly affected by the retaliatory tariffs is agriculture. Other sectors, including mining, oil, and automobiles, are also impacted by the rise in tariffs.
In Wisconsin, 9.5% of total jobs are affected by tariffs. Among these, an estimated 77% are supporters of Trump. Additionally, Indiana follows with 8.5%, Iowa with 8.4%, Arkansas with 8.2%, and Alabama with 8.1%. More than 70% of jobs in these regions belong to Trump supporters.
During the first term of the Trump administration, countries including China imposed tariffs targeting agriculture, causing significant damage to U.S. agriculture. President Trump spent $20 billion (approximately 30 trillion won) on agricultural support at that time.
